Legend of the Volcanoes Audio Tour

Audio Commentary by Luis Tubens, mural historian

DETAILS:

In 2019, when the owners of this tortilla factory needed to tuckpoint their west-facing wall, they used the opportunity to commission a new mural to replace an existing one painted on the building a decade earlier. Created by a husband-and-wife duo known by their Instagram handles MATR and Kozmo, the Legend of the Volcanos mural is befitting a business that takes its name from Popocatépetl (or “El Popo”), an active volcano in central Mexico that appears in the mural. Completed in spray paint, it illustrates an epic Aztec love story, lending the modest neighborhood tortilleria an aura of mythological gravitas and connection to the ancient past.
