DETAILS:

An important civic anchor for Humboldt Park, Roberto Clemente Community Academy is named in honor of the great humanitarian and baseball star who perished in an airplane crash while bringing earthquake aid to Nicaragua. Clemente played his entire career for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but his legend was such that Puerto Rican communities all around the country celebrated his success. Clemente was the first Puerto Rican and Latin American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Named Tuley High School until 1974 when the school moved across Division Street to a new, larger facility, students demanded the name change along with a shake-up in the administration and curriculum. At the time approximately 53% of the students were of Puerto Rican ancestry, and the power dynamics were shifting to reflect this fact. Today, the high school serves several hundred students with an International Baccalaureate (IB) degree program. Look for the vibrant public murals portraying symbols of Puerto Rican history and culture.
