DETAILS:

Following the lead of neighbor John Scales, W.H. Lake, a successful grain broker, chose to commission Maher as architect for his home. The basic form of the house is a rectangle with horizontal elements drawing the composition together. The facade is overshadowed by the deep overhang of the double hip roof, creating the most striking horizontal element in the design. Three large windows at the second-floor level are symmetrically arranged, featuring simple art glass. A deep veranda extends from the center of the front facade to the east, adding another strong horizontal element to the composition.
