Piazza Di Italia Di Chicago Audio Tour

Audio Commentary by Jeanette Dominguez, musician, educator and graduate student in the Sound Arts and Industries program at Northwestern University

DETAILS:

Flags representing each of Italy’s 20 regions fly over Piazza Di Italia Di Chicago. Formerly Piazza DiMaggio, where until recently a statue of baseball star Joe DiMaggio once stood, it was renamed in 2022 to honor Italian immigrants who came to this community to seek better lives. WHAT TO LISTEN FOR: Piazza Di Italia Di Chicago features six fountains surrounded by benches and a circular garden in the center of the plaza. Listen to the sound as it shifts in space as you walk around the fountains. Sounds of neighbors and passerby fill the plaza with conversation and laughter on a lunch break or at the end of the day. Sounds from the surrounding restaurants and shops mingle with the hum of traffic on Taylor Street.
