Paseo Boricua Gateway Flag Audio Tour

Audio Commentary by Billy Ocasio, President & CEO, National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture and former alderman

DETAILS:

Since 1995, enormous twin gateway sculptures in the shape of fluttering Puerto Rican flags have stood tall at either end of the Paseo Boricua, welcoming people to the cultural and commercial heart of Humboldt Park. Each gateway is a system of intertwined red and blue steel tubes and plates rising 55 feet high and straddling Division Street. The innovative design makes a rippling, billowing form of rigid structural steel. Growing out of a community design process, the flag sculptures are local icons and a point of pride for the Puerto Rican community in Chicago. In 2022, the Paseo Boricua Gateway Flags became protected Chicago landmarks, enshrining their cultural and architectural significance.
