DETAILS:

Chinatown’s branch library is an important new civic, educational and social hub in the neighborhood, and a highly sustainable building to boot. Inspired by a traditional Chinese courtyard plan, all spaces connect to a central atrium, providing clear orientation. The soft curves of the three-sided structure match the alignment of the avenues, allowing for abundant landscaping and an inviting pedestrian experience. One of the first things people notice when approaching the library is the seemingly off-center entrance. This and other design decisions came from the architect consulting a feng shui master during the early planning stage. The door’s placement is, in fact, intentional and exact.
