UChicago South Campus Chiller Plant

This award-winning 26,000-square-foot building converts electricity into chilled water for cooling university buildings. Its unique design incorporates large machinery with brightly colored pipes, ducts and equipment behind a curtain wall of clear glass. The facade changes with sheets of perforated stainless steel held in front of pre-cast concrete planks at the building’s air intake and exhaust areas.
