UChicago Keller Center

The new home of the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, the Keller Center reimagines an iconic Modernist building. Originally designed by the architect of Radio City Music Hall and the Aon Center, an $80 million restoration inserted a four-story atrium and new windows to bring lightness to the formerly imposing structure. Interior wood paneling and a grand social staircase are constructed of local trees felled by the emerald ash borer and reclaimed by renowned Chicago artist and UChicago faculty member Theaster Gates. Energy-saving adaptations including a green roof and a rainwater-capture system, which helped the Keller Center achieve the rigorous LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge Petal certifications, making it one of the most sustainable buildings in higher education. A selection of permanent and rotating installations of socially engaged art offer delightful surprises throughout the space.
