Andersonville
Ebenezer Lutheran Church
1650 W. Foster Ave.
DETAILS:
Ebenezer Lutheran Church has been an anchor in the Andersonville neighborhood from the beginning. The Swedes who settled in the area completed the sanctuary in 1908, and the congregation quickly grew to over 2,000 members at its height. The sanctuary has beautiful Swedish stenciling along the ceiling, stained glass windows that are the largest of their kind, and an intricate altarpiece. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the sanctuary are two large original pieces by Warner Sallman, painted directly on the walls to either side of the altar. A 1987 remodeling carefully preserved the historic elements of the sanctuary. Today, the church's spaces are made available for many community uses.
