Woodlawn
Grand Ballroom
6351 S. Cottage Grove Ave.
DETAILS:
Woodlawn was a major entertainment destination during the Jazz Age--the heyday of this stunning building. The Grand Ballroom's elaborately-detailed terra cotta facade encloses shops on the ground level and ballroom above. The ballroom includes an original 60-foot oak bar and a dance floor illuminated by graceful arched windows. The elegant interior has whimsical touches befitting its original name, the Cinderella Ballroom (it was also known as the Granada for a time, after the original Granada burned down in 1930). The slipper and the pumpkin are featured motifs in the floor, light fixtures and elsewhere. The stage is a dramatic scalloped shell reminiscent of the inside of Cinderella's fairy tale carriage. It has been graced by many notable musicians over the years. After a recent brush with demolition, today the Grand Ballroom has been fully restored as a venue for dance and music.
