Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Chapel of the Sacred Heart

1852 W. 22nd Pl.

DETAILS:

This Jesuit-sponsored college prep—the first in the national Cristo Rey Network—was founded in 1996 with a mission to provide quality education and professional work experience to students from Spanish speaking families with limited financial means. The main school building, completed in 1998, is attached to the former St. Stephen’s Parish, which was constructed in 1904 to serve Slovenian immigrants. The parish went on to build a school in 1922 and a center in 1951 that later was converted into Cristo Rey’s library and gym building. A chapel renovation in 2010 included the installation of an altar created by the National Museum of Mexican Art that depicts Cristo Rey students imagining themselves walking with Jesus.
