Mahalia Jackson Court
1 E. 79th Street
DETAILS:
Mahalia Jackson Court is an outdoor plaza and community space that was created in 2022. It was developed on a vacant lot as part of the City of Chicago's POP! Courts program. It features a variety of sculptures and murals honoring hometown music legend Mahalia Jackson, a natural playscape made up of native species, a "micro" museum inside of a shipping container, a stage, and custom-designed seating areas with integrated planters.
A host of activities take place at Mahalia Jackson Court including a farmers market, concerts, holiday celebrations, and other community events. It also functions as the western gateway to Mahalia's Mile, a new state-designated cultural district spanning a 1-mile stretch of 79th Street from State Street to Cottage Grove Avenue.
