Greenstone United Methodist Church

11211 S. St. Lawrence Ave.

DETAILS:

Greenstone Church features a unique facade of green stone quarried in Pennsylvania. With the exception of the chancel arrangements, the sanctuary has remained unchanged since the 1880s. The cherry wood of the altar and pews is original, as is the Steere & Turner manual-tracker pipe organ. Originally built as a Unitarian Church, the building stood empty for some time because the various religious groups in the community could not agree to share its facilities and no one group could afford the high operational costs. A Presbyterian congregation eventually worshiped there until the property was sold to the Methodists in 1906.
