South Shore
St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church
2132 E. 72nd St.
DETAILS:
Designed by prolific Chicago church architect Joseph W. McCarthy, St. Philip Neri was intended to serve the rapidly growing population of the South Shore neighborhood in the early 20th century. It's enormous by both today's standards and the standards of its day. Its sleek stone and marble design inspired the streamlined use of Gothic elements in many other buildings across the neighborhood.
