Logan Square

Minnekirken

2614 N. Kedzie Blvd.

DETAILS:

Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church—also known as Minnekirken, or "Memorial Church"— is the small red church that everyone in Logan Square recognizes. The Gothic Revival structure opened in 1912, when the neighborhood had a large Scandinavian population, it is similar in structure to Bragernes Kirke in Drammen, Norway. The church continues Norwegian traditions today, with its Christmas celebrations, waffle-making events and performances by Norwegian artists. Some of the worship services also include Norwegian liturgy and hymns. The church's beautiful sanctuary, largely unchanged since 1912, is known for its superb acoustics and congregational singing is often accompanied by a pipe organ. The facade and tower of Minnekirken were restored in 2021.
