Flat Iron Arts Building

The famed Flat Iron Arts Building was built on the former residential home of early Chicago settler Nathan Allen. The home was considered undeveloped when architects Holabird and Roche accepted a commission to build the three store office and retail building. Known for its impressive exterior, the Flat Iron Arts Building’s intricate white terracotta ornamentation and red and black checkerboard pattern amaze architecture buffs. Indoors, pressed tin ceilings and skylights illuminate the office-lined hallways. In the late 1960s the building was converted into an artist community.
