Downtown

1001 South State

1001 S. State St.

DETAILS:

1001 South State is one of the tallest and most prominent new buildings in Chicago. This apartment building appears to be a curvy glass tower on one face but is angular on the other. It rises at an angle that sets it off from the street grid to open up surprising vistas. The fifth floor is packed with unusual features. At the north end, a "makerspace" outfitted with a 3D printer looks out on a calming grove of birch trees. To the south, the waterproof indoor “Aqua Lounge” opens onto a dramatic curved deck with extensive lounge space and fountains arcing through the air into the pool. Upper floors offer commanding views of the rapidly changing South Loop.
