Grosse Point Lighthouse

2601 Sheridan Rd.

DETAILS:

This picturesque lighthouse is depicted on the seal of the City of Evanston. The 113-foot tower was built by the federal government in 1874 as a navigational aid for Lake Michigan. The location was selected in response to a number of maritime disasters involving nearby shoals. The lighthouse was originally built of brick and was coated with a protective layer of concrete in 1914. Now owned by the city, it still operates using its original lens—a beacon that can be seen up to 21 miles away. The keeper's cottage and corridor leading to the 25-foot diameter base of the tower contain historical and educational displays.
