West Town
Holy Trinity Polish Roman Catholic Mission
1118 N. Noble St.
DETAILS:
Holy Trinity is arguably the most distinctive of the numerous monumental "Polish Cathedral"-style churches along the Kennedy Expressway. The church was founded in the 1870s to relieve overcrowding at nearby St. Stanislaus Kostka, the “mother parish” of Chicago’s Polish community. The building is a pastiche of architectural features from various eras and styles, possibly an homage to the centuries of accumulated eclectic alterations evident on European churches. The massive 25,000-square-foot sanctuary is column-free and richly decorated with stunning murals and stained glass--most of which was not completed until decades after the church opened. Today, Holy Trinity continues its long tradition of holding most masses in Polish.
