Harmony Community Church & Sounding Boards Garden

1908 S. Millard Ave.

DETAILS:

Sounding Boards Garden is a multi-purpose design intervention that will transform this underutilized space into a new asset for the North Lawndale community, adjacent to Harmony Community Church. Designed by Eastlake Studio in collaboration with Redmond, the garden is a platform for conversations, music, and performing arts, and a space for remembrance.Sounding Boards is a non-profit organization that amplifies the voices of progressive artists through public art. Inspired by Black Lives Matter demonstrations in the summer of 2020, Sounding Boards brought artists and business owners together to create murals on boarded-up storefronts. Sounding Boards Garden is constructed using some of the organization's commissioned murals and will feature a new work by Damon Lamar Reed. The interior of Harmony Community Church, built in 1907 as Millard Avenue Presbyterian Church, will also be open to visitors, and members of the congregation will be available to speak about its architectural history and the current work Harmony Community Cares is doing to support the neighborhood through education and assistance with food insecurity.
