DETAILS:
Lawson House opened in 1931 as the administrative headquarters for the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. This historically significant Art Deco tower combines modern design and construction methods. Serving large numbers of immigrants and the needy, it was important to design for single room occupancy with communal baths and areas for socializing and recreation. The renovation of Lawson House from 583 SRO/hotel style rooms to 406 efficiency apartments, each with a private bath and kitchen, addresses today's needs. Original architectural features were restored. This includes limestone cladding on the exterior, trimmed terra cotta, cast iron, and ornamental panels. The interior restoration includes a lounge, library, and themed rooms like a Tudor-style office with exposed dark beams and half-timbered plaster walls, and a log cabin with fireplace and flag stone floors. There is also a Gothic chapel with stained-glass windows and a simple altar below an intricate Art Deco panel, a travertine foyer, and a grand open staircase. Tilework was restored where possible. Long term rental subsidies ensure affordability for residents.
