Architect

Albert Wilcox/I. W. Tilton

Year Completed

Begun in 1880. 1883 to 1886, work stopped. Completed 1887

DETAILS:

Completed in 1887 as a replacement for an earlier structure lost to the Great Fire, Church of the Ascension is an impressive example of the French Gothic style. Exquisitely carved statues, an elaborate marble and mosaic altar, intricate metal work in the rood screen, stained glass windows primarily crafted by Willet Studios, and more heighten the grandeur of the sanctuary, as does the magnificent 70-rank Berghaus/Schlicker organ along the back wall. Outside is a beautiful courtyard garden and fountain open to the public during daylight hours for prayer and reflection.

ENTRANCE INSTRUCTIONS:

All visitors should enter through the garden.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE:

Visitors are welcome to explore the church and garden on their own, with brochures detailing the art and architecture within. Docents will be available to answer questions. Some special events will be offered during the weekend, including organ demonstrations, an open choir rehearsal, and the opportunity to observe (and participate if so inclined) the Sunday morning Solemn High Mass from 11 AM - 12:30 PM. There will be refreshments available in the parish house all weekend.
